He is a fiction writer and a professor of English Literature at Saint Mary’s University in Halifax, Canada. His debut fiction collection, Light Lifting won an Atlantic Book Award and was named a finalist for the Soctiabank Giller Prize, The Frank O’Connor International Short Story Award and The Commonwealth Book Prize. The collection was also named a “Book of the Year” by the American Library Association, The Globe and Mail, and Amazon.ca. This year, he won a 2019 International O Henry Prize for his short story, Lagomorph, originally published in Granta.
