Who Is This and
What Is Happening to Them?
In this workshop, we will examine the relationship between characters and plots in fiction. We want to try to think carefully and strategically about the way these two elements come together in effective scenes. How do we recognise the key moment in a good story? What actually happens in the best scenes? Are the internal attributes of characters ‘revealed’ through action or do the external demands of plot dramatically ‘re-shape’ the people inside the scene? What roles do description or dialogue play? How fast or slow should a narrative move during its most important moments?
During this session, we will talk about both of these elements and try to construct scenes that feature complex characters working through compelling plots.
